Publishers across the country are talking about comments sections—how to improve them and whether they should exist at all. We know our own can get pretty scary. (And sometimes, it can be hilariously funny. Want to hear those comments? Watch this video, featuring writers from our newsrooms.)
This week, we’re rolling out some improvements to our commenting tools aimed at improving the experience for commenters and readers alike.
Philly.com users will notice that all our stories now include a reminder of our comments policy. (Short version: No hate speech or personal attacks, please.) We also want to remind you that you can help moderate. If you see a comment that violates our policy, please flag it by clicking the flag icon in the right corner of the offending comment.
On our news stories, we’ve also added a click-through button so that you can choose whether or not you’d like to read the comments. We know that sometimes there are a lot of opinions flying around the comments section and that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. We also know that there are plenty of readers who want to chat about news stories and we’re happy to provide that forum for their conversations. Our hope is that the click-through will help keep everyone a little happier.
These changes are done with a simple goal in mind: making Philly.com a more enjoyable and informative place to read and talk about Philadelphia.
